MINUTES OF THE

NEW UNDERWOOD CITY COUNCIL

A regular meeting of the New Underwood City Council was held on October 19, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. Present were: Mayor Benita White, Councilmembers: Jackie Dahlquist, Michael Green, and LeeAnn Schumacher. Absent: Tyler Richter. Also present: The Fin. Officer Meri Jo Anderson, Asst. Fin. Officer Teresa Gossard, Dir. Public Works Greg Hall, Officer Mark Hughes, Larry Graham, , and Whitney Gilbert.

AGENDA

Moved by Dahlquist second by Schumacher to approve the agenda. Aye: all. Motion carried.

MINUTES

Motion by Schumacher second by Dahlquist to approve the October 3, 2005 minutes. Aye: all. Motion carried.

SCHOOL CROSSWALK

Mr. G. Hall reported the crosswalk at the school is done. Dr. Ertz requested another crosswalk further east on Ash St. and the Council agreed to this request. The Mayor will call Dr. Ertz.

DISTRIBUTOR

The engine on the distributor needs replaced. A lengthy discussion on whether to rebuild the original engine, purchase a used engine, purchasing a rebuilt engine, or shop for another truck followed. After deliberation it was moved by Dahlquist second by Green to rebuild the original engine. Aye: all. Motion carried.

COMMUNITY CENTER

Mr. G. Hall reported the speakers in the Community Center were repaired and are now working. He also said a new microphone needs to be purchased. Raising the rent on the Community Center and renting the sound system will be discussed in the near future.

LAW ENFORCEMENT

Officer Smith reported on cases that are active at present.

CITY HALL RENOVATION & MANSION

The Mansion will be staying in Pierre.

The Mayor and Council would like to have an open meeting and brainstorm on building a new shop and City Hall.

 

 

 

 

 

FILL COUNCIL VACANCY

The Mayor reported there were two applicants for the vacancy in Ward 1: Larry Graham and George Langendorfer. Motion by Dahlquist second by Schumacher to appoint Larry Graham to fill the vacancy in Ward 1 until the next election. Roll call vote. Aye: Dahlquist, Green, and Schumacher. Nay: none. Motion carried. Mayor White administered the oath of office to Alderman Graham whereupon he was seated on the Council.

BONFIRE @ RODEO GROUNDS

The Fellowship of Christian Cowboys requested a bonfire at the rodeo grounds on October 22, 2005. Motion by Green second by Schumacher to grant this request. Aye: all. Motion carried.

CENTENNIAL

Mark Smith with A & A Engraving spoke to the Council about a commemorative rifle for the New Underwood Centennial celebration. He showed them different ideas for a rifle and suggested a Winchester 94 30-30. A proof rifle would be sold to the centennial committee and raffled off as a fundraiser. He will speak to the Centennial Committee also. Anyone interested in serving on the Centennial Committee should contact City Hall.

DRAMA CLUB

Whitney Gilbert representing the NU Drama Club requested the use of the Community Center Nov. 7th through the 11th for the School Play. Motion by Schumacher second by Green to grant this request and charge them $35.00. Aye: all. Motion carried.

BUILDING PERMITS

BP#05-24; Dustin Graham; 220 E. Ash; carport.

Motion by Schumacher second by Green to approve this permit. Aye: all. Motion carried.

OTHER ITEMS DISCUSSED THROUGHOUT MEETING

  1. The letter was sent to a property owner on "B" Ave. to mow the lawn.
  2. Swanson pasture tap tabled.

Being no further business the Mayor adjourned the meeting at 7:07 p.m.
